A series of workshops was organized by the KIU on “Leadership and Management for Nursing Professionals” was held on 17th, 29th and 30th of March 2016. The first two workshops were held at the Renuka City Hotel for the Special Grade Nursing professionals of the government hospitals from the western province. With the great success of these two, the third workshop was held at the auditorium of KIU on the 30th March 2016. This workshop was mainly targeted for the future nursing leaders; the ward managers (sisters), nursing officers –in- charge, from the hospitals in the government sector.
Around 120 participants from The National Hospital of Sri Lanka, The Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, The National Eye Hospital, Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital and the leading government hospitals in Colombo District; were took part in this event.
The participants were enriched with the eminent experiences of Mr Lalith Weeratunge, (The Former Secretary of Excellency President, The chair of the University Courts, and the Chief Adviser of the Advisory Board – KIU), Mrs. Deepika Samamarasekara, [B.Sc.N. (OUSL), PGDDE (OUSL), MPhil (Kelaniya),Senior Lecturer, Head – Department of Pharmacy , Faculty of Health Sciences of the OUSL] and Mrs. Hemamala Vithanarachchi (B.Sc.Nursing, M.Sc Nursing , Head of the Nursing Department, KIU), on the topics of “Managing Multidisciplinary Teams” , “Decision making and problem solving in Nursing Management” and “Continuous Development as a Nurse Manager”.
This workshop was acknowledged as an admirable action taken by the KIU for the development of the nursing profession by many of the participants as they have seen that the nursing professionals are not having such opportunities to upgrade their knowledge at present.
At the end of this workshop the participants also had an opportunity to view the available facilities for the students who are learning at the KIU.
