Mr. Ahmed Shareef, The Honorable Deputy Minister of Education of Maldives graced KIU, Sri Lanka with his presence on 25th of September 2015. The minister, who is the former Member of Parliament for the Thimarafushi constituency, has been serving as one of the Deputy Ministers of Education since late 2014. He possesses extensive experience in the Education sector and has made a name for himself as a proficient individual in the field. Furthermore, he acted as an atoll leader as well, and held the positions of General Secretary to the Elections Commission and the Secretary General to the Peoples Agency (PA). The minister’s visit comes as a resounding confirmation of the international recognition that KIU is gaining as a Centre of excellence for higher education.
The Minister was warmly welcomed by the University Court Chair and Chief Advisor of KIU, Mr. Lalith Weeratunga and Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Jagath Seneviratne. The visit was a result of an invitation extended by Mr. Lalith Weerathunga to study the extensive efforts KIU has taken to establish a world class centre of higher education.
The Minister, commenting on the education of Maldives, drew comparisons with state education in Sri Lanka and noted the significant presence of Sri Lankan teachers employed in the Maldives. He also extended an invitation to KIU to take part in the educational fairs that are held in Maldives and discussed in great detail about the prospect of Maldivian students studying abroad.
At present, KIU offers Degree, Higher Diploma, Diploma and Certificates programs in areas such as KAATSU, Biomedical Science, Acupuncture, Nursing, Psychology, Ayurveda, Business Management and English. KIU currently offers the first and only BScHons (Nursing) degree by a private sector higher education institute with University Grants Commission’s approval outside the state university system in Sri Lanka.
The Honourable Minister spoke extensively regarding the nursing programmes that are on offer in KIU and the possibility of nursing programmes being offered in Maldives as well. He studied enthusiastically the techniques of KAATSU training and noted the importance of such practices being introduced as modes of alternative medicine.
KIU is the brainchild of Chancellor and the founder , Professor Sir Yoshiaki Sato, who is the inventor of the KAATSU Training method which is currently being adopted by many countries in the world. Thus, KIU is expected to provide KAATSU teaching and training methodology for the students through the graduate and undergraduate programs it offers.
